Mass and Class

The European Athletics Championships will be held in Germany for the fourth time and for the second time in Munich after 2002. The first European Athletics Championships took place in 1934 - hence the continental championships have been around much longer than the World Championships, which debuted in 1983. The 2012 European Championships in Helsinki, Finland, introduced a two-year rhythm.

Around 1,500 athletes will compete for gold, silver, and bronze in 50 medal events - which means that the sport of athletics will have the most athletes and the most finals at the European Championships Munich 2022.

The home of Athletics

Athletics is grounded on the basic movement forms: running, jumping, and throwing. Thus, it is suitable as a classic beginner's sport for children, who become familiar with the versatility of movement. In school sports, where running, jumping, and throwing are elementary components of the lessons, contact with athletics intensifies. However, the European Athletics slogan "Your Sport for Life" goes far beyond a temporary reference to athletics but implies that there are many ways to become enthusiastic about and involved in athletics: as a health and fitness enthusiast, top athlete, coach, competition judge, volunteer, club member and fan - athletics meets all needs.

Also from a sporting point of view, the biggest events have taken place here: the finals of the 1974 FIFA World Cup, the 1988 UEFA Euro and the Champions League in 1997, as well as the 2002 European Athletics Championships.
