Exciting the crowds

Who does not remember the picture at the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio: When the German beach volleyball players, Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst, danced in the sand of the Copacabana and celebrated their Olympic victory in front of 12,000 fans. The top stars of the sport will now come to Munich. After 12 years, the Beach Volleyball European Championships will return to Germany.

For the first time, Munich will host the CEV EuroBeachVolley in August 2022 – right in the heart of the city. A total of 128 players, each of the 32 best male and female teams, will compete for the beach volleyball crown of Europe.

The scene of the popular and exciting title matches will take place in the centre of Munich at Königsplatz, a place where modern lifestyle, classicism, and antiquity come together. On summer evenings, Königsplatz is one of the most popular places to go to for Munich residents. They stroll around the square, play sports in large groups on the green areas, sit together on the grass and on the stairs of the Glyptothek in the north or the Collection of Antiquities in the south. Cinema open air events like “Monaco Franze”, perhaps the most famous son of Munich, concerts by Herbert Grönemeyer, Kiss and even opera singer Anna Netrebko create a special cultural charm on Königsplatz. With the competitions in beach volleyball and sport climbing, the sport highlights are already guaranteed for August 2022.

A team consists of two players. The team that first scores 21 points, wins the set. At a tie of 20-20, the game continues until one team wins the set with a two-point lead. To leave the court as the winner, you need to win two sets. When the score after two sets is tied at 1-1, then the final third set will decide who wins the match. Therefore, the team that reaches 15 points first or, in case of a tie at 14-14, claims a two-point advantage, wins the match.
