Future Class of 22

European Championships Munich 2022 show the stars of tomorrow the ropes

The organisers of the European Championships Munich 2022 are working hard to built a legacy that will live on beyond August 2022. The three-pillared Future Class of 22 project aims to leave a lasting impact on the sporting landscape by inspiring young people to get involved in sport. The most important partners in the persuit of this goal are local schools and clubs. As members of the interactive Future Class of 22 community, teens and young adults in Germany will have the opportunity to become an active part of the European Championships Munich 2022.

The Class of 22 is leading the way: Our docuseries shows 14 German athletes making great strides towards their goal of participating in the European Championships Munich 2022. The upcoming major event in front of a home crowd is very popular with the host nation's top athletes. But young athletes also play a central role for the organisers, too. As part of the Future Class of 22, teens and young adults can follow in the footsteps of their great role models and get a taste of the European Championships themselves. The three-part programme aims to bring children and young people closer to the joy of movement and the values of sport in times of the pandemic, as well as to spark an active interest in the European Championships Munich 2022.

Promoting young talent through school sports competitions

Serve on the same sand as Clemens Wickler or play table tennis in the Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle like Sabine Winter - the Future Class of 22 project focuses on young talent. In beach volleyball, table tennis and gymnastics, school sports competitions with a European Championship flair are planned in Munich and throughout Bavaria in cooperation with the respective state associations. School teams will compete against each other and represent Germany in their own way.

The highlight will be the finals, as they will be held during the European Championships Munich 2022 and on the actual fields of play! In beach volleyball, the participants will compete for the title on the centre court at Königsplatz and the winners in table tennis will be determined in the Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle. The winners in gymnastics will be crowned in the Olympiahalle.

In the competitions, the pupils compete with their peers and can feel like real professional athletes they might become one day. Our cooperations with the "Run yourself fit!" initiative of the Bavarian Athletics Association and the "Move yourself smart!" project of the Felix Neureuther Foundation and the Bavarian State Sports Association round off the school sports competitions. The competitions' finals will further take place within the framework of Munich 2022 and guarantee goosebumps for the 200 or so finalists.

Local activation in grassroots sport through the Future Class of 22 Community

In addition to sporting school competitions, the Future Class of 22 Community was launched in November. The online community is aimed at young people aged 14 to 20 and takes place in cooperation with respective state associations. The Future Class of 22 Community promotes the involvement of young people in the context of the European Championships Munich 2022 and beyond with online workshops, digital meet & greets of the Class of 22 athletes and more.

Edutainment through sports action day

The third pillar deals with didactics and transmission. New, creative approaches are implemented to further training for teachers. In order to awaken or strengthen young people's enthusiasm for sports, a sports action day is held for local schools and clubs.

"With Count & Last, we have launched an initiative to focus on sustainability at the European Championships Munich 2022. Two central components are climate neutrality in many areas of the multi-sport event and the use of existing infrastructure," says Marion Schöne, organiser and managing director of Olympiapark München GmbH, and continues: "But the area of social sustainability is also of great importance to us. With the Future Class of 22 project, we want to inspire children and young adults to take part in active sports and also give them the opportunity to contribute their creativity to the European Championships Munich 2022."
