Playing with Gravity

The sport of gymnastics consists of the Olympic disciplines of artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics and trampolining as well as the non-Olympic disciplines of acrobatic gymnastics, aerobic gymnastics, tumbling and TeamGym. The European Championships in artistic gymnastics will take place within the framework of the European Championships Munich 2022 - another premiere for the Bavarian capital.

The competition will take place in the Olympic Hall, as it did at the 1972 Olympic Games. Europe's best gymnasts will jump and swing in 12 acrobatic decisions for gold, silver, and bronze - 5 for the women and 7 for the men.

In addition to the professionals, the stars of tomorrow will also be able to show their skills. The continental title competitions in artistic gymnastics of the juniors will also be held in the Olympic Hall parallel to the European Championships of the elite gymnasts.

The home of Gymnastics

Gymnastics is one of the oldest sports. Since the beginning of the modern Games in 1896, gymnasts have always taken part in the Olympics without exception. In the past, gymnastics was a generic term for all types of physical exercise. Today, gymnastics means versatile movement in the sense of a variety of physical exercises. Gymnastics develops both physical fitness and coordination skills and is suitable for all age groups. There is gymnastics for children, parent/child gymnastics and forms of exercise for senior citizens. In physical education, the students come closest to classical gymnastics competitions.

With a capacity of up to 15,500 spectators, the Olympic Hall is Munich’s biggest indoor hall and the second biggest venue in the Olympic Park. As a regular venue for high-class concerts and sporting events, it is setting another example for sustainable post-Olympic usage. In 1972, the Olympic Hall staged the handball and gymnastics events, providing the perfect backdrop for Olga Korbut’s historic medal run. In the summer of 2022, it will once again welcome the best European gymnasts.

The score consists of the D-score and the E-score. Two judges will determine the difficulty of the exercise (D-score) after each exercise. Seven further judges determine the value (E-score) for the execution. Initially this is always 10 points. Mistakes in the exercise lower the E-score. The D- and E-scores together give the total score which is decisive for the result. The top eight teams in qualifying will advance to the team final while the best eight athletes will compete in the apparatus finals.

ABOUT THE FEDERATION

ABOUT THE FEDERATION

European Gymnastics counts 50 national member federations. It is a sports organisation, which reaches far beyond the borders of political Europe but nevertheless bears the idea of a united gymnastics nation. As guarantor of interests of its more than 10,000,000 gymnasts, European Gymnastics represents quite different facets of the sport: from Olympic sports to gymnastics for all.

European gymnasts transmit their understanding of being together beyond the borders and set an example in community. No other sports federation in Europe proposes such a diversity of offers as European Gymnastics. One can find not only high-level sport in the four Olympic disciplines and the three non-Olympic disciplines, but also leisure sport with offers for all age groups, from toddlers to senior citizens.
