The athletes had the crowds going across all venues, making them hold their breath during high-flying tricks, cheer on history-making performances and go ‘oh là là’ in sight of a tricolore podium.&nbsp;

Triathlon

<a href="https://results.mun.mev.atos.net/ECM2022/en/results/triathlon/daily-schedule-date=2022-08-13.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Triathlon</a> seems to come as easy as 1-2-3 for the French as they swept the podium in the men’s race. Léo Bergere crossed the finish line first, followed by his countrymen Pierre Le Corre and Dorian Coninx.&nbsp;“After two laps on the run I decided to make a move and test the legs and see how the others reacted. I just went for it and it was enough,” an elated Bergere commented following the race. “I am so glad to finally win a race. I am so used to finishing in second and third place.&nbsp;&nbsp;“It was a perfect day for team France. It was a crazy course, the first time I had the opportunity to race with such a big and loud crowd. I was feeling like Alpe d’Huez at the Tour de France. Amazing day.”&nbsp;He was also full of praise for his teammates, crediting them for making the victory possible. “We really went for it on the bike. It was clearly a strategy we wanted to make. Climbing

Claiming that Janja Garnbret (SLO) has been a dominant force in <a href="https://results.mun.mev.atos.net/ECM2022/en/results/sport-climbing/daily-schedule-date=2022-08-13.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">sport climbing</a> would be an utter understatement. The 23-year-old entered Saturday’s lead final with, amongst others, one Olympic and six world championships gold medals to her name and a clear mission in mind – adding a European Championships gold to her silverware collection.&nbsp;&nbsp;Her relief and joy were palpable after she completed the mission successfully. She was joined on the podium by silver medallist Jessica Pilz from Austria and France's Manon Hily who clinched bronze.&nbsp;&nbsp;“It feels amazing to tick the remaining box,” she said. “The European championships is probably one of the hardest to win because you are expected to win it. HAT-TRICK FOR JEANJEAN

The <a href="https://results.mun.mev.atos.net/ECM2022/en/results/cycling-bmx-freestyle/daily-schedule-date=2022-08-13.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">UEC BMX Freestyle Park European Championships</a> came to a close on Saturday with a spectacular and suspenseful men’s final. At the end of the night, the podium left the crowd with a sense of déjà-vu, as Frenchman Anthony Jeanjean won a third consecutive European gold after stomping his second run to record 93.60 points. British rider Kieran Reilly (92.10) and Croatia’s Marin Ranteš (88.80) rounded out the podium.&nbsp;“I am feeling amazing, I am very happy about my result,” an ecstatic Jeanjean said following the final. “It was so important for me to do this after winning the previous two (European Championships).”&nbsp;The riders enjoyed the support of thousands of fans who left a lasting impression on Ranteš: “The atmosphere is insane. There are so many people, and they are cheering for all of us. The Italians have been enjoying a fairy-tale campaign in the women’s <a href="https://results.mun.mev.atos.net/ECM2022/en/results/artistic-gymnastics/daily-schedule-date=2022-08-13.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">artistic gymnastics</a> events. European all-around champion Asia D’Amato (ITA) has clinched her second gold medal at the as she helped Italy win the women’s team title on Saturday. For Italy, it’s the first European team title since 2006 and their second ever.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;“This medal is even more special for me than the all-around one, because I can share it with my team,” D’Amato admitted.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Italians competed flawless routines across all four events and scored 165.163 points, four points ahead of second-place finishers Great Britain (161.164). When Mieke Kröger (GER) described her emotions after winning gold in the women’s individual pursuit, she might as well have described the whole rollercoaster of emotions Saturday’s <a href="https://results.mun.mev.atos.net/ECM2022/en/results/cycling-track/daily-schedule-date=2022-08-13.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">track cycling</a> events at Messe München had in store. “It’s mixed,” she said, and mixed it was.&nbsp;The home crowd was loud and happy when their favourites took three out of five available European titles but went silent when Letizia Paternoster (ITA) suffered a heavy crash in the women’s elimination race. Table Tennis

The <a href="https://results.mun.mev.atos.net/ECM2022/en/results/table-tennis/daily-schedule-date=2022-08-13.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">European Table Tennis Championships</a> kicked off at Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle with a packed schedule of doubles’ action.&nbsp;Solomiya Brateyko (UKR) and Anton Limonov (UKR) won their mixed doubles preliminary round of 32 match comfortably in three games against Foteini Meletie and Marios Yiangou from Cyprus. However, for the Ukrainian pair, who have had to leave their home country to be able to prepare for the European Championships Munich 2022, the participation is already a victory in itself.&nbsp;"We are very happy that we won this match, and we are really happy to be here at the European Championships," Brateyko said.&nbsp;"For us, now, in this moment, it is really important to play such competitions and show the flag of Ukraine.”&nbsp;Saturday’s programme also had mixed doubles medal candidates Sabine Winter (GER) and Benedict Duda (GER) ride the home fans’ support to beat Italy’s Jordy Piccolin and Debora Vivarelli 3-1.&nbsp;&nbsp;”It’s a really nice feeling to play in front of the home crowd,” Winter said. ”I’ve been looking forward to this competition a lot. EARLY BIRDS

TWO MEDALS ON THE LINE

Sport climbing

The first winners of <a href="https://results.mun.mev.atos.net/ECM2022/en/results/sport-climbing/daily-schedule-date=2022-08-13.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">sport climbing</a> gold medals will be crowned when the final of the women’s lead and men’s boulder take place at Königsplatz in the centre of Munich. Both disciplines will feature semifinals in the morning before the finals take place later in the day.While Slovenian star Janja Garnbret will be the one to beat in the women’s competition, the home crowd’s fingers will be crossed for the only German climber in the boulder semifinal, Hannah Meul.The 21-year-old admits there is a challenge to turning her focus back to lead after competing in boulder action on Friday, but there is nowhere else she would rather be.

“It's a kind of a new experience and also tiring for sure,” she said. “I'm super happy that I'm able to compete in both disciplines and I will make the best out of it.“I will go to the physio and just relax and focus and switch to lead climbing again. Then I'm only thinking of tomorrow (Saturday), not the day after tomorrow or next week. It's just tomorrow and I want to give my best and try my best and smile. JEANJEAN EYEING HAT-TRICK

Reigning European champion Anthony Jeanjean (FRA) is looking to defend his title as the men’s <a href="https://results.mun.mev.atos.net/ECM2022/en/results/cycling-bmx-freestyle/daily-schedule-date=2022-08-13.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">BMX freestyle park</a> final gets underway on Saturday. Jeanjean, who clinched the title in both 2019 and 2021 – the only European Championships raced so far – is eyeing a hat-trick of titles after dominating the qualifications. Having qualified in first place, outscoring the rest of the field by a sizable margin, the Italians aim to bag their nation’s first European team title since 2006 – the only time Italy topped the team podium so far.After winning a bronze medal at the 2019 world championships in Stuttgart, the Italian favourites are eyeing a podium finish in yet another German city. Maggio said she is confident about Italy’s chances to clinch the gold. "Our individual scores were so good, which means that the team could be OK for the finals,” she said after team qualifications on Thursday. “I am sure we are able to take the gold in the team event. The race will take place on the same distance as the women’s event, the Olympic distance. Track cycling

Day 2 Review: Medal joy for hosts Germany

Whilst the favourites ran away with victory in most events, they were not immune to defeat in others.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Benjamin Thomas (FRA) ran away with two gold medals, while the German women thrived on the enthusiastic home crowd to win both the team pursuit and team sprint golds in <a href="https://results.mun.mev.atos.net/ECM2022/en/results/cycling-track/daily-schedule-date=2022-08-12.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">track cycling</a> on an action-packed Friday at Messe München which saw six medal decisions.&nbsp;The spectators didn’t need a real warmup in the afternoon session, clapping and cheering loudly when Germany took on Italy in the women’s team pursuit gold medal race. The Italians went out faster and led the 4000m race all the way through until the 3600m split.&nbsp;&nbsp;In the end Germany had just a little more stamina to edge out Italy by a 0.699s margin. Lisa Brennauer, Frankziska Brauße, Mieke Kröger and Lisa Klein were over the moon.&nbsp;Klein commented: “It was not an easy route to come here, and it was not an easy competition for me either. It’s never easy, but with me it was already tough from the start. In the last kilometre I could only struggle to keep the last wheel and the girls kept accelerating. My head said that I couldn’t keep it up anymore, but we are going home with the best time of the tournament. That’s outstanding.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

NO(N) EXPECTATIONS

Friday’s elite women's <a href="https://results.mun.mev.atos.net/ECM2022/en/results/triathlon/daily-schedule-date=2022-08-12.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">triathlon</a> was far from predictable, with plenty of action to entertain the crowd scattered around Olympiapark and those watching from home. The gruelling course saw Great Britain’s Non Stanford make a decisive move on the third lap of the run to break away from German home favourite Laura Lindemann and Emma Lombardi of France.&nbsp;With her competitors struggling to keep the pace and catch up, the British athlete who recently competed for Wales at the Commonwealth Games, ended up reaching the finish line first to be crowned new European champion.&nbsp;&nbsp;Much to the delight of the local fans, Lindemann managed to hold onto second place ahead of Lombardi who took bronze.&nbsp;&nbsp;Stanford said after the race: “I can’t believe how many people came out here to watch the race! I surprised myself out there today, I came here with no expectations after competing in the Commonwealth Games recently. The 16-year-old only qualified for the final in seventh place following a fall during Thursday’s qualifications but rebounded in the final where the top favourites failed to live up to the expectations.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Defending champion Nikita Ducarroz (SUI) and 2020 Olympic champion Charlotte Worthington (GBR) crashed in both runs and left Olympiaberg with a disappointing fifth and eighth place, respectively. The two had previously qualified in first and second place.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Miculyčová bounced back from Thursday’s fall and managed to claim victory with a score of 80.00 points, which she had gained with her first run. It was a score that no-one was able to beat. Germany’s Alexander Megos celebrated his birthday in style by topping the leaderboard in the men’s lead qualification on the second day of <a href="https://results.mun.mev.atos.net/ECM2022/en/results/sport-climbing/daily-schedule-date=2022-08-12.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">sport climbing</a> action at Königsplatz. The now 29-year-old finished ahead of Czech star Adam Ondra and fellow German Yannick Flohé. The home crowd will be hoping for a similar result in Sunday’s final.&nbsp;&nbsp;“The first route involved a bit more climbing, and less bouldering and jumping around, like the second one, but I did ok on both routes. So, I’m happy with that,” Megos commented, adding: “The routes will change for the semifinals and final, so it is rather a case of maybe finding the right style for the routes and their setting, but qualification is about just getting through everything.”&nbsp;Olympic champion Janja Garnbret (SLO) got through the women’s boulder qualification with ease, living up to the expectations. The racing was hard and furious at the Olympic Regatta Centre on Friday, determining the crews who will contest Saturday’s medal races and the remaining semifinals at the <a href="https://results.mun.mev.atos.net/ECM2022/en/results/rowing/daily-schedule-date=2022-08-12.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">European Rowing Championships</a>.&nbsp;Some crews had to overcome obstacles to make it through. The British men’s quadruple sculls crew suffered an upset early in the race when Matthew Haywood (GBR) got his blade stuck in a wave, stopping them dead. The British crew remained calm and fought back to take the third and last spot in their semifinal behind Poland and Romania.&nbsp;There was also an exciting race in the second quadruple sculls semifinal, as Estonia produced the fastest second 1,000m to finish in the third qualifying spot, behind Italy and France. At the graffiti workshop we bring colour to the wall, at the hand lettering you can develop your own handwriting - and then in the evening a special art performance awaits you.&nbsp;Is graffiti art or just graffiti? Anyone who takes part in our workshop on the Kids Roof will at least know how to use the spray can afterwards. What you then conjure up on the wall is left to your creativity. You can experience how professionals approach this in the afternoon at the VANDALI art performance on the Creative Roof. People in painter's suits and gas masks stand in front of empty walls and begin to design them in an artistic act. All of this is garnished with futuristic music and a seemingly robotic movement pattern that is executed simultaneously. If that reads as freaky, it is, but that's why it's particularly worth seeing.&nbsp;

SOLIDARITY AND ART 

How do you react when someone is attacked on the subway? Looking the other way is one solution, but it is more solidary to stand up for the other person. You can find out what you have to watch out for without endangering yourself in our civil courage workshop. Everyone can certainly take something with them for everyday life. The hand and brush lettering workshop is a bit more banal, but incredibly creative. You will learn step by step, how to create an individual greeting card with your own handwriting - a nice souvenir from your day at The Roofs.&nbsp;

RHYTHMIC DANCE UNDER THE STARRY SKY 

Fancy African club sounds to accompany you through the night? Then you've come to the right place tonight at the Creative Roof, because that's where Freak de l'Afrique, a Berlin-based collective of DJs, MCs and dancers, who also deliver a breathtaking stage show to match African sounds, will be performing. The band Pho Queue also makes it extremely danceable on the Multicolour Roof. The Munich trio combines funk with electronic R'n'B, a sound that immediately spreads to legs, hips and arms. Ladies' day pt. 2

Europe’s best female athletes are also on show in the <a href="https://results.mun.mev.atos.net/ECM2022/en/results/triathlon/daily-schedule-date=2022-08-12.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">triathlon</a>, as the Elite women contest their race for gold. The course will take them through Olympiapark, as they take on the standard Olympic distance of 1500m swim, 40km bike and 10km run. After diving off the pontoon the women will complete two 750m loops in Olympiasee, exiting the water once before diving in again for a second lap to conclude the swim. They will head into the first transition, snap on their helmets and grab their bikes to make their way to the mount line which indicates the start of the cycling leg of the race. Asia D’Amato (ITA) has clinched the first gold medal of the European Championships Munich 2022 as she secured the <a href="https://results.mun.mev.atos.net/ECM2022/en/results/artistic-gymnastics/daily-schedule-date=2022-08-11.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">individual all-around title</a> on Thursday evening. The 19-year-old performed strong routines across all four apparatus to score 54.732 points. Alice Kinsella (GBR) took silver (54,132), with Italy’s Martina Maggio grabbing the bronze (53,965).&nbsp;&nbsp;“When I entered the competition, I knew that I could do a great job today,” D’Amato said. “Before my bars routine (the final event) I understood that it was possible for me to take the gold medal so I got a little nervous but I stayed strong and focused because I really wanted this medal. Germany’s Oliver Zeidler learned to row at the Olympic Regatta Centre – but despite his familiarity with the course, he almost came to grief in his <a href="https://results.mun.mev.atos.net/ECM2022/en/results/rowing/daily-schedule-date=2022-08-11.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">opening race</a> at Munich 2022.&nbsp;Zeidler was left on the start as his competitors in the men’s single sculls set off without him, and he had to chase down Kristian Vasiliev (BUL) and Quentin Antognelli (MON) to eventually take the win and progression to the semifinals.&nbsp;“My oars hadn't been locked correctly, and there was a bit of uncertainty if the (starting) gates are already open behind me,” Zeidler said afterwards.&nbsp;&nbsp;"I've done more than 1,000 starts here at the course, and this was definitely one of the worst. But we should concentrate on the result, it was a win and I could save one race tomorrow. The stunning architecture at Königsplatz provided for the perfect backdrop as Europe’s best <a href="https://results.mun.mev.atos.net/ECM2022/en/results/sport-climbing/daily-schedule-date=2022-08-11.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">sport climbers</a> started their quest for European glory in the heart of Munich.&nbsp;&nbsp;While the men competed in boulder, the women took on the qualification in lead climbing, that means rope climbing. Each athlete had to complete two routes within six minutes. Only one climber managed a top either of the routes: Janja Garnbret from Slovenia. The Olympic champion proved once again that she is might just be unbeatable.&nbsp;&nbsp;Second-placed Jessica Pilz from Austria also thinks so. "It's inspiring to watch her, but you can't really compare yourself to her because she's just climbing at a completely different level," she says, saying what many think out loud. The reigning European champion Anthony Jeanjean of France secured the top spot on the leaderboard in the men’s qualification. The fact that the Frenchman was this calm and collected was especially mesmerizing as the Olympic silver medallist Declan Brooks (GBR) crashed right before it was Jeanjean's turn. Sadly, Brooks had to pull out of the competition and did not compete his second run.&nbsp;Title holder Nikita Ducarroz of Switzerland and Olympic champion Charlotte Worthington of Great Britain cruised through the women’s qualification with ease and onto the top of the leaderboard, which saw eight riders advance to the final. Taking to the waters 

The quality of the athletes competing at the Olympic Regatta Centre in Munich is emphasised by the very first event of any sport at the European Championships Munich 2022. Reigning world, European and Paralympic champion Birgit Skarstein (NOR) is the favourite for the PR1 women’s single sculls, which begins the <a href="https://results.mun.mev.atos.net/ECM2022/en/results/rowing/daily-schedule-date=2022-08-11.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">European Rowing Championships</a> with a race for lanes.Skarstein will compete against European and Paralympic silver medallist Moran Samuel (ISR), European bronze medallist Anna Sheremet (UKR) and relative newcomer Manuela Diening (GER). “Rowing in Europe is very, very strong. And many big teams arrive – able-body and para. Germany is known for good rowers – women and men. Most of my leading competitors are Europeans,” Samuel said in an <a href="https://www.munich2022.com/de/paralympische-rudermedaillengewinnerin-moran-samuel" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">interview</a> last month.As the first major championships since the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Munich will test crews at the start of the lead-in to the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris. Track or park?

Cycling fans will be spoiled for choice, as the beloved sport is featuring four disciplines in the Bavarian state capital. <a href="https://results.mun.mev.atos.net/ECM2022/en/results/cycling-bmx-freestyle/daily-schedule-date=2022-08-11.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">BMX freestyle park</a> is the youngest discipline in the long tradition of competitive cycling. It’s not about speed or getting to the line first, but about s bike-handling, kill, guts, style and grace. In the third European Championships, the riders will show their spectacular tricks with splendid views of Munich’s grandeur and the Alps as a scenic backdrop. Competition will be held from 11-13 August, with qualification heats for both genders on the first day, followed by the women’s finals on 12 August and the men’s finals on 13 August.

The home crowd will have something to look out for, as <a href="https://results.mun.mev.atos.net/ECM2022/en/results/cycling-track/daily-schedule-date=2022-08-11.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">track cycling</a> gets underway with the team event qualification races on the first of seven exciting competition days at Messe München. The German ladies are reigning world champions in both the team pursuit and team sprint events. At the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 the German ladies Franziska Brauße, Lisa Brennauer, Lisa Klein and Mieke Kröger broke the world record in all three races on their way to gold.Germany will face tough competition from Great Britain, who also broke the world record and held it briefly during the Tokyo competition. World champions Italy are also in the mix for a medal. Gold medal chasers

Janja Garnbret (SLO) is set to be the star of <a href="https://results.mun.mev.atos.net/ECM2022/en/results/sport-climbing/daily-schedule-date=2022-08-11.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">sport climbing</a> at the European Championships Munich 2022, with the Olympic champion among a stellar field of 200 climbers from 26 nations that will compete for eight sets of medals at Königsplatz in the centre of the host city. The Slovenian ace won gold in the women’s Olympic combined at Tokyo 2020 to become the first woman to win Olympic gold in the sport, but she is chasing a first European Championships medal having won silvers in 2015 and 2017. The 23-year-old has been in good form on the World Cup circuit with four wins from four lead competitionsThursday will see the women’s lead qualification, while boulder qualification is on the men’s agenda.
