Sustainability

The European Championships Munich 2022 will have an ecological impact. Despite or rather because of this, we are taking on the challenge of raising awareness for social issues and initiating projects, topics, and changes through the European Championships Munich 2022. We aim to generate long-term added value for the host city, the region and the country, and serve as a source of inspiration for future major sports events. As Local Organising Committee (LOC) we are aware of our responsibility towards nature, society and the economy and are committed to actively contribute to local and global sustainability. We have established a sustainability management system within our structures and developed a sustainability strategy that prioritises six focus areas.

Count and Last

Count and Last

The sustainability strategy forms part of the Count & Last initiative, which makes a valuable contribution to the ecological, social, and economic sustainability of Munich 2022. In addition to targeted measures during the organisation of the multi-sport event, the initiative includes twelve challenges in which everyone from young to old can participate and make a difference.

With this long-term approach, we support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.

Munich 2022's sustainability management sees itself as a continuous process. We are always open to creative ideas on how we can achieve our sustainability goals together and set new standards to create a sustainable legacy.

Reuse of sports facilities and equipment

In terms of sustainable sports facility management, we focus on the reuse of venues and the life cycle of sports equipment. The use of existing sports and training facilities was already emphasised during the bidding phase. The majority of the sport competitions will take place in existing sports facilities. Nevertheless, it is partly necessary to carry out renovation and refurbishment works and/or to set up temporary structures as well as to purchase sports equipment. We take care that the life cycle of sports venues, materials or equipment is extended.
